Any other newbies to Spiritfire this year?

This year will be my first year attending the festival. I am super excited. Is anyone else on this message board new? Do people ever go alone? because I don't know anyone else that can afford to/want to/able to take time off work to go so I will be driving out there alone - so if anyone needs a ride from Queens, Brooklyn, NYC area let me know. But anyway is it odd to go as a loner?? Any tips for a newcomer??

Phoenix Fire REBATES NOW AVAILABLE!

Dear friends,

We are excited! to offer a rebate to those who refer new registrants to the Phoenix Fire Gathering.

While we have spent some money on ads, we'd mostly like to give the money to you - while at the same time encouraging you to spread the word to your circles of friends and family.

We know that in these times of rising gas and food prices, and economic uncertainly, a gathering like Phoenix Fire might seem like a luxury. We also know what a necessity it is to spend quality time with like-minded others, to see the best of ourselves reflected back to ourselves in community. Thus, we are always looking for ways to make it more affordable, to save money, and pass that savings directly back to you.

DETAILS:
For each new person that you refer to register for Phoenix Fire you will receive a rebate of $20. Each new Phoenix Fire attend! e will be asked who referred them. If that person (say, you) is already registered, you will receive a $20 rebate. This will be deducted from your balance due if you've made a deposit, or returned to you as a check at the gathering. You can get multiple rebates for multiple referrals.

REQUIREMENTS:
- You must be registered and have a deposit (or full fee) paid before the qualifying registration comes in. No retroactive rebates.
- The registrant qualifying you for a rebate must be someone who has never attended Phoenix Fire before.

We hope that you will become partners with us in spreading the word about Phoenix Fire. See you around the fire in August!

Can anyone tell me who is the NE regional supplier for the drum? I'd love to buy one and need to try it out and discuss specifics.
Call for SpiritFire 2008 BLING proposals!

Each year, one of SpiritFire's unique offerings is the keepsake
tokens (lovingly called SFF Bling since 2005 or so) that each attendee
receives. The tokens have traditionally been made "in-house" -
meaning, it's one of our community artisans who've done the work.
Owen White did amazing laser-etched watchers, Eileen Jager created
amazing sand-etched glass "pathway medallions" 2 years ago, and then
last year Melanie Gartleman handcrafted clay/kiln-fired pieces. Each
year the bling has been linked to the year's icon (designed each year
by Martin Bridge) which appears on our T shirts, in the fire circle
rangolis, on the postcards, etc. - this design is meant to symbolize
our ideals and focus for the year's' gathering.

This year something special has happened that gives us the opportunity
to try something that might expand this family of artists. We have a
sponsor who has offered to cover the cost of materials for this year's
tokens. We have a possible source for bling at this point that is
pretty cool, but it's not "in-house" - so we thought we'd put out a
call for proposals from... YOU!

So....

Announcing the 2008 "Call for Bling Proposals"

Do you have a craft/artistic talent that you'd love to use and
contribute to the SpiritFire gathering this year?
Are you able to create a design that reflects or is related to the SFF
2008 icon?
Can you work in a time-sensitive situation?
Can you create 200 tokens by July 29?

If so, read on! We would like proposals to be emailed to us with the
following:

1. A JPEG or other image that shows a sample, sketch, or other visual
representation of your idea
2. A written proposal that includes the information below.

And please tell us:

1. How long it takes to make these items
2. A description of what it's made of
3. How sure are you that you can do the work by the deadline
4. How much the materials would cost
5. Why this is a cool idea for SFF 2008 bling

ALL SUBMISSIONS MUST CONFORM TO THE FOLLOWING:

1. They must be able to be worn on a necklace
2. They should not be easily breakable
3. They should feature the 2008 icon or be related to it in some
obvious way; a jpg of the image is at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/spiritfirefestival/files
- look for the BLING folder
4. They *must* be completed and on site by July 29
5. There need to be 200 of them
6. They should be comfortable to wear - no sharp edges, etc

Please email your proposals to Joss *and* Martin Bridge by no later
than April 1st, 2008. Our emails are both on the bling proposal
form, also found at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/spiritfirefestival/files

Looking forward to your ideas!
Joss, Martin, and....

Ghanaian and Haitian dance/drum in VT, April 12-24

Hello folks,

Thought I'd drop you a note to let those of you who like drum and dance (hmmm. anyone here?) know about an extraordinary opportunity up here in VT.

My friend and link to sanity in the town of Tamale, northern Ghana was a young dancer named Awal Alhassan. On top of his skills, he was a great teacher, jokester, and all around good guy. I hadn't seen him (and still haven't) since I left Ghana a few years back - that's usually the case, unfortunately.

However, by a weird coincidence I was online a few months back and voila! There he was on the web - he had married, moved to Seattle, and is teaching regularly there. WOW! It's been great to catch up with him - he really did help me a lot. He's the second guy in the video linked here - this was on my birthday in Tamale. Now you know what it's like to have West Africans sing Euro-Western ditties: http://youtube.com/watch?v=XX0Ev9tLg_M

ANYWAY. His current website is here: http://awalalhassan.googlepages.com/ - you can see vids of his dance and Dagbamba drumming too.

I'm SO lucky, because we've worked it out so that Awal will be in residence here in Vermont (at St. Michael's College, where I teach) for 2 weeks, from April 11th - 24th!!! Yay! We'll be hosting a workshop weekend here and performing in two concerts, all of which are listed below. He will teach Dagbamba dance styles that I am pretty sure most of you haven't seen before, but which are used in circle-style just like we have around the fire. I will also be co-teaching Ghanaian drumming with him, both Dagbamba and Ewe styles.

To make it even better... those of you who were at SFF 07 will remember Johnny Scovel, who taught Haitian drum and played for the Haitian dance class. He is truly a remarkable and fun teacher, and a ton of folks insisted I tell them when Johnny came back out - so here you go, this is your warning! Johnny is scheduled to be out during that same time, teaching during the weekend workshop (Haitian drum/dance) and then playing in the concert on April 24th. I do hope you can make it.....

If any of you would like to come up for one or more of the dates here, or attend the classes I teach at St. Mike's where they will be teaching as guest artists, it'd be great to have you. I can help find lodging for a limited number of folks who want to come. Awal will be at my home, but we have room for a few more, and I can get crash space for others up in Burlington if given enough notice.

Please let me know asap if you intend to come - it'd be great to have you and see all of you again - and I can't express how rare and valuable this chance is to work with artists who aren't normally out in this part of the country. Space is limited due to the size of the dance studio on campus, but we have plenty o'room for drummers! Some drums will be available, more info will be sent out to those who are interested.

Here's the current schedule - subject to confirmation, as I'm still awaiting some info from the campus events coordinator:
SoulFire Props, a community finding its way HOME.

Greetings!

I hope you are all well.

The DC local SoulFire crew has developed a most harmonious relationship with each other surrounding the concepts of intentional music making, sacred space defining and transmutational shamanic healing, thru esctatic dance, art, rhythm and community. The ease and the grace with which we set our events up and take them down is truly a blessing in my life. This is mostly true cuz it is clear that there is effort and attention to detail by all of us, and that means that there is sustainability in this model. The content that shows up, with invitation is amazing. The Potlucks are more and more delicious, and the take downs are being done in under an hour! There are children, adults, "tweens", teens, folks from a plethora of different paths, and joy in the eyes of all.

i wanted to send a shout out to this collective of fire circle folks to announce that we have found a local site for Sacred SoulFire! YEAHHHHHH.

For the past 3 years we have been doing SoulFire Inside at Seekers Church in DC, developing the experience and intentional community based values of a sacred fire circle. We have wafted around looking for the right place for us to develop a longterm home for our outdoor Fire Circle work and play. While we have been told we "should" go to the same place and "should" be at the same time of year, we have not been able to deliver on that. In principle we agree with the suggestions, but previously we have not found the right spot for us that will enable and support our longterm growth and viability, as one of the many styles of fire circle magic available to those who seek it for themselves.

A few months ago, i sent out some requests to friends in the Frederick area, looking for sites for Sacred SoulFire. I got a couple interesting leads, but it took me a minute to follow thru on them. Recently Bellavia, Leah and myself took a ride up to Hawkwood Farm, and as soon as we arrived on the land, we all felt how things were beginning to fall into alignment. By the time we rode around on the land (it was cold and wet that day) and were sipping on a beverage in the farmhouse, with Erin (the guardian of the land) it was very clear to each of us, that it is well worth running the experiment of Sacred SoulFire at Hawkwood Farm, this summer.

There are so many synchronicities, they are too many to reflect here, but the 2 biggest are the name similarity of our home in the Southeast (Hawkwind Earth Renewal, Alabama) and the fact that Hawkwood is in HARMONY, MD.

It is our hope that Hawkwood Farm will provide the stability we desire. Yet we know that we have to follow our hearts, with no attachment to the outcome. Whatever happens, we have entered into this communal experiment, by accepting Hawkwood Farm's invitation for us to come there. Clearly, Hawkwood Farm is supporting the sacred all night fire circle movement and appears to becoming a sanctuary for surburban and urban folks like me. This land calls out to us to bring our music, motion and mojo to work with the spirits of the place, the nature, community, self, other with a focus of helping to bring more light to the world. It is a place that will welcome you with open hands and encouragement for who you are.

Details on presenters, cost and offerings to come soon, but here is what i know now.
Sacred SoulFire-Maryland
Dates: Thursday July 3rd to Sunday July 6th, (Core Collaborator Days are Weds and Monday)
CONTENT: 5 Elemental Groups (teaching & sharing circles) that will focus on deepening our relationship with self, other, spirit & the Fire Circle Itself. Community Ritual, Community Art Projects, Gratitude Tree, Ceremonial Tattoo work with SMS, All Night Fires & more.
FOOD: We will have an AMAZING Meal Plan headed up by Darriel Park (just ask anyone who was at SSF-WV how the food was)
CHILDREN: Child Centered Programing will be instigated by Tammy (Darriel's wife)
LAND DETAILS: 91 acres to find the perfect spot for camping, woods and open fields, a pond to swim and fish in, a barn to have an inside circle if we get rain, or have a movie night in. Several Fire Circles already developed, an hour from Baltimore, and hour and a half from DC, with plenty of parking.
COST: as low as we can make it.

Hawkwood Farm is home to Erin Aylor, an amazing artist and kind person. He has welcomed us with open arms and an open heart, and all involved feel a resonance of sustainability and growth. With our (Owen and myself) plans to develop a space in Baltimore, and Erin's plans to develop his land for events like SoulFire, it seems that the universe is presenting us with an opportunity to work with the Urban/Rural model of collaboration.

FUTURE NEWS:
Long Term Event Horizons include the possiblity that we will begin Full Moon Drum and Dance events, with the colder months being at our space in Baltimore and the warmer months being at Hawkwood Farm. Time will tell us, and as soon as we have a plan for that phase, we will let you all know.

Here is a link for Erin's myspace page so you can see some images of the farm and his art.
profile.myspace.com/index.cfm

We hope you will join us, especially if you are a local to DC/Baltimore on July 4th weekend.
With that said, we all know it is difficult to schedule without conflicting other fire circle dates. My "polling of peeps" reflected that 99% of us felt that this is a good weekend for Sacred SoulFire, as the content of our work is so different from each of the other events (we know of) being offered on that weekend. We recognize the good work that each crew of folks delivers, Earth Drum Council (AHO) and 4QF (Drum and Splash). We trust the process of the interconnected, diverse Fire Circle community members being able to choose the event that most supports their personal preference of Fire Circle style.

If we do not see each other at SSF-Maryland, may the spirits weave our paths together at some other juicy event, and very soon!
Brightest of Blessings!!!

Peace Matters,
Mz. imani

SpiritFire 2008 Registration is OPEN!!!!

We are excited to announce that our early registration for SpiritFire Festival 2008 is now open, both online and mail-in. You can read all about what's included, rate deadlines, and more at:

http://spiritfirefestival.org/register.php

Our list of presenters will be updated soon. We've also left the 2007 schedule up to give 1st time attendees a chance to see the basic structure while 08 begins to take shape. The first staff meeting is coming soon so if you have specific suggestions or proposals to make that you'd like early consideration for, this is the time!

To give you a small taste of some of what's changing this year:

~We're planning on restructuring our schedule to include "Pathway Workshops" in 2008, which will focus on the dynamics of music, motion, voice, Seva, and the mysteries as they are approached at SpiritFire. This is a result of a lot of good suggestions by many of you last year who wanted more personal connection and communication between the pathways, and each other. We'll enhance these initial workshops by holding space for evening meets like the one the musicians had before the last fire.

~We have some new presenters coming, and cherished friends returning... keep an eye out here for more info and also watch the workshops section of the SFF website!

~Our retreat hosts will have a menu designed for our review in mid-July this year, meaning we can publish it for those of you who have dietary concerns (or who just want to know what to plan on bringing to supplement your meals.) Yay!

Scholarship applications are available online or on the "files" section of the Yahoo Group website. They are due by April 1st. If you know someone who might be helped by a scholarship, please help point them to the right place so they can apply on time.

Presenters: if you have a workshop you've been wanting to offer at SpiritFire, proposal forms are also available online. These are also due no later than April 1st. Please be aware that in order to have a workshop considered for SFF, a proposal has to be sent in so that the staff can review and consider it.

More soon. Looking forward to seeing you all around the glow of firelight at SpiritFire, and other fires too!

Blessing,
The SFF staff

Drum in the New Year as we step outside time to tend the soulfire of our dreams and hopes for the future.
Engage your soul to explore how the previous year has shaped you. Say good-bye to the old and welcome the new, by consciously setting your intentions high for 2008.

Gather with friends and family of CoSM, to celebrate the New Year with live painting, collaborative art, a drum circle, visionary DJ’s and discussions and music with Andrew Cohen. Check out the CoSM website (www.cosm.org) for all the juicy details.

Just know that Kiana Love, Martin Bridge and myself will be co-creating an interactive opportunity to clarify our intentions for 2008. In CoSMosis we will have collaborative art tables set for you to artistically represent your visions of '08, which will be carried to CoSM Fire and offered to the fire. We set our sights and intentions high to consciously connect to the muse and the spirit of community through art, music, dance and rhythm. We will explore a multitude of sounds and tempos. Quieter instruments and chants welcome. Bring your djembe or any other instrument you like!

Hello Spirit Fire siblings,
I miss the Fire Circle. I'm sinking back into winter's isolation with the hope that we'll all get through the dark months and see each other at next year's fire.

Before then, I hope to contact Amanda about a possible art commission. If you know how to reach her, I'd be grateful if you shared that information with me.

Stay warm,

Hey all,

Hope you are well!

Some of you who were at SFF might remember seeing the wooden box drums (cajons) we had that are played by sitting on them and using them like drums. The ones I have also feature 2 drum heads on either side (to emulate Cuban bata heads), and then rhumba-style metal keys on the front, like a large mbira. The instrument is made by a U.S. company called "AfroRhythms" - owned by a Nigerian, they make a lot of cool percussion.

We have two of them; I got them to see if folks might get an interest in playing them at fire circles, and was intending to sell them at SpiritFire but was never in my booth! I know some of you totally dug them, so I thought I'd let you know I've decided it's time to get these out of the house. Online they sell for $275. I'm offering them for $225 (bargaining/trades considered!)

A picture is below, and below the photo is a link to the AfroRhythms online store's instrument info page (in case the photo attachment isn't allowed on the SFF list - can't remember). Feel free to email me if you have questions about the instrument. They are great for many kinds of rhythmic circles, but we are out of room in our house and I just can't hang on to them anymore, nor do I have time to set up my booth this season at all the wonderful events going on.

Just in case the link gets chopped - http://www.afrorhythms.com//product_info.php?cPath=24&products_id=48

Be well! See you soon I hope,

Hello to all!!

I wanted to make the SpiritFire community aware of an event I am
putting together here in beautiful Warwick, NY. There is an incredible
historic horse farm in this town situated on 230 acres of land which
has generously allowed us to hold space on their property for a Sacred
Fire Circle.

Some of you may have heard of this place...it is called Borderland
Farm. It may sound familiar because just this past Mothers Day 2007,
the magnificant 1800's Victorian farm house which was a landmark in
this town burned to the ground taking the life of the farm's barn
manager. What many people do not know is that on the same site the
original 1700's Colonial farm house also burned to the ground many
years before. Oddly, the barns which are right next to the homesite
housing dozens of animals, where never touched by the fire on either
occassion. It is many people's thought in the community that some type
of harm was done by people on this land maybe to Native Americans
which is why this tragic history keeps reliving itself in an effort to
remove the human presence but never harming the animals in any way.

It is our intention to do a ritual on the spot of the old homesite to
clear/cleanse the area...remove the destructive aspect of fire from
the spot...and take it to a new place on the property where we will
use it for good and celebration and honor it's power to heal in a
place where it has done a tremendous amount to hurt in the past. It is
our feeling that a tribal ritual on these lands will honor the spirit
of those who may have perished, release them and thusly bring a
harmony and balance back that is obviously very much needed.

This event will be held Saturday Night, October 20th. We will begin
with the opening circle and cleansing ritual at the homesite promptly
at 7:00...and then move to the Sacred Circle site to drum and dance
until 12:00 midnight...when we will celebrate the new day's arrival
and hopefully a new energy brought to these grounds. Everyone is
welcomed to stay and continue on drumming and dancing until the
morning...and of course you are welcomed to camp out overnight as well!

It is our hope to use this place next year for a weekend festival and
to continue to use it for years to come for this higher purpose.

Please, Please, Please come join us...we will be opening this up to
the community in general so that they may participate and heal as
well. There will be many people there who have never experienced a
Sacred Circle and so it would be great if as many people could come as
possible who are "veterans" so that these new people feel the power of
our beautiful tribal spirit!!

Any suggestions would be GREAT as I am literally putting this together
starting today....I would love to hear from a Shaman or
Priest/Priestess who would have advice or words of wisdom on our
ground cleansing ritual.

Thanks so Much....MANY BLESSINGS!!

Registration for SpiritFire 2007: Last Chance!

Starting on July 22nd, the "Last Minute Registration" period officially is in place for this year's gathering. This means:

1) the registration rate goes up
2) registration is only possible if there is still room - meaning, instead of last minute reg, it could be closed
3) registrations can ONLY happen online - no forms received after July 22 will be opened or accepted (we won't be here to receive them!)

If you plan on going this year (hope you do!) I recommend registering now, as based on current information, registration will close earlier than the last minute deadline.

http://spiritfirefestival.org/register.php

Many good things happening this year - the chemistry of faces, new and old, that have signed up feel really good! Can't wait to see what happens in the container this year. And I hope you'll be there to be a part of it!

Cheers,
Josselyne

Some thoughts about the importance of community

My friends,

Within the distributed network of friends and family who regularly attend festivals, events, and circles associated with the Fire, pagan practice, and/or the path of rhythm, we often use the word … community. I believe we are right to do so. What we seek in coming together is more than simply an opportunity to drum and dance; we are looking to build meaningful connections with others. I believe that our personal and collective search for community is a good thing, and in the spirit of contributing to its development and to each person’s awareness of how important it really is, I’d like to bring your attention to an interesting resource.

As some of you know, I work at Middlebury College in western Vermont. Last Sunday, the commencement speaker at Midd was former president Bill Clinton. His address was on the subject of community and its vital importance to all of us in the coming years. I invite all of you to watch his address (link below), if for no other reason than the fact that he provides clear words—and power—to what most (or all) of us hold as our thoughts and intentions. The speech is not long, only about twenty minutes, and is well worth the viewing.

Feel free to distribute this note to anyone who might enjoy such a message.

All the best,

Steve

Opening up the Mountain for the season - join us!

Hey folks,

This is an invitation to join a few of us who are returning to the mountaintop where we hold SpiritFire to help with the retreat's annual "Opening the Mountain" week. We'll be going to work up top on Sunday, May 13th, from 11am-ish till when we get done. If you've been to SpiritFire, are going to SpiritFire, or are considering SpiritFire, this is a great way to meet people and walk through an open door to be a part of something pretty special.

Stuff that we'll be doing:

1.) emptying out the SFF shed, cleaning out winter critter stuff, and building some shelving before putting stuff back in
2.) checking altars and other items to make sure they're in good shape
3.) helping the retreat folks sweep out huts/workshop areas, do minor repairs, whatever they need
4.) playing with chainsaws and cutting wood, both for our use in August (we'll be storing a stack to dry for use in August, and for the retreat to use over the summer)
5.) laughing a lot
6.) sweating a lot

If you arrive on site early enough, the Sufis will provide breakfast and also later in the day, brunch. (or you can bring your own food to eat - we usually do). I think you'd also be welcome to camp on site either the night before or after free of charge if you'd like some quiet time on a beautiful sacred mountain. Bring your work gloves, wear work clothes, and join us for some fun! And feel free to bring chainsaws and other tools if you'd like.

I need an RSVP if you plan on coming so I can let the folks there know how many to expect please, and if you can, an idea of when you'd be arriving that day. Any time you can contribute would be most welcome!

Email me on Tribe and I'll respond with directions if you haven't been there before. Hope you can make it!

See you soon,
Josselyne

Come Drum at Killington Ski Resort (Vermont) on April 14th!

Our local VT drumming community has been invited to return to Killington on Saturday, April 14th: VGRC to open up the
Sunshine Daydream Festival! 10 - 11am drum circle (may go to past 11, depending on the
situation) with drumming and all manner of rhythmic decadence.

After you drum, you can go ski/ride!

How to get there: Take your best route into the Killington ski area (see http://
killington.com for directions and maps). Follow the main drag all the way into the resort,
and park at the K-1 lodge. Walk to the K-1 base, where the beer garden/cafeteria is, and
on the beer garden deck is where we'll be. If you want to pull right up next to the area to
unload, just let the folks know you're part of the drum circle group and they'll let you do
that before you go park. This drum circle is part of their annual Sunshine Daydream
Festival - lots of Grateful Dead style tribute bands and other stuff will be going on, so feel
free to stay and play.

They've asked us to play from 10am - 11am.

hope you can make it!

See you there,
Josselyne

Date & Time: Thursday, May 24, 2007

Please help us find a percussionist to stand in for Mawwal at the May show.
Contact Attar@bigstring.com if you are interested and is familiar with Middle Eastern Music and comfy with free improvisation... you'd be sitting in with Mawwal and driving it along either alone or with their drummer.

Also.. I keep meaning to mention at D&D.. if anyone is interested in live drumming for bellydancers, we have a running bellydance night once a month on Thursdays at the Art Bridge. Contact Attar here or at the email address above!

Rangoli sand in the Spider Clan photos...

Greetings everyone,

I would like to ask anybody who knows, about the pigments used in the colored sand for the fabulous rangoli designs in the Spiritfire photos... Inspirational!
They look especially great in the near-twilight, and on the dark ground.

Rangoli is something we at the Bohemian Firecircle have just scratched upon, and I would like to see us take it deeper. The thing is, our location is a cow pasture for all the rest of the year, and in a nature-preserve area. We have a dance track on grass, which we cut as short as possible. The pigments might be something else to be careful with as well. Flour, corn meal, and plain sand is quite alright. The bright colors though, Hmmm... We want to avoid leaving too much of an impact on our site.

Does anybody have info on safe, environmentally friendly pigments that will work with sand, or flour, or something else?

Thanks in advance,
Bilhelm

2007 Presenter and Workshops Update for SpiritFire

Greetings!

Over the past couple of weeks, many presenters have been confirmed and we are starting to put up current bios/workshop descriptions on the SFF website (http://spiritfirefestival.org) . This is our fifth year, and there is so much to celebrate!

Not all presenters are up, and the workshop descriptions are coming in slowly as we work to balance out the offerings to both contrast and compliment one another. I will make an announcement when a majority of those descriptions are posted, but I can tell you now that we have workshops in the following planned, as well as others:

Seva/Spirit: Eco-Spirituality and the Fire Circle
Dance: Haitian, Guinean, Chakra, Tribal, and Spinning/Veil classes!
Music: African, Haitian, and other kinds of drumming!
Voice: Conscious Vocal Improv, and more coming

Affinity groups this year will include the HomeComers (SpiritFire Intro), Ta Ke Ti Na, 12 step, and about 3-4 others have been suggested. If you have an idea for an Affinity group you'd like to offer/lead, please contact Joss about it off list.

3 of the four fires have been named and full descriptions are coming soon.

A reminder: Early Registration goes until April 10, so March is the last full month to apply for a great price that includes meals, tenting bunks (if available), and all events/workshops. If you wish to apply for a scholarship or to present, you can download the applications from either the "files" section of the SpiritFire Yahoo Group page, or from the SFF official website.

Energy is building and it feels goooood! Can't wait to see you all again.

Cheers, and blessings -

Registration is OPEN for SpiritFire 2007!!!

Well, we're almost done with the site revamp - thank you thank you Janet! And while we
are not live with the newly redesigned site until a day or two from now, early registration is
now open at http://spiritfirefestival.org/register.php - you'll save quite a bit off the
regular rate; for the various deadlines and such for online/mail-in registration, read the
reg page and all the details will be there.

Early registration is basically a radically discounted rate - our way of saying "Thank You"
for joining the festival community so early in the season, and setting the container for
those to follow!

Rates are set at this rate until April 10th (even later than last year!); and even better news?

All the rates are the same as last year!!! This includes amazing food, workshops, great
jams, smiling faces, new and old friends, rituals - and the delicious center: fire circle
rituals we create together for four nights in a row.

For those who register and are wondering about staying an extra night (through to
Monday) on site - that camping fee will be payable directly to the Abode on site, so no
need to indicate whether or not you will be staying at this point.

Looking forward to seeing all of you,
Josselyne

The military, and change.

Recently my boss informed me he was assigning me to work on a military project.

My whole career, I've had a simple policy: I won't build tools to kill people. Period.

"Accept the assignment or resign", was his only position.

He sent me home several days in a row "to think about it, and consider the consequences." I did consider the consequences, and I resigned.

I do not feel what I did was courageous or brave. I don't want to believe what I did was rare enough for those accolades.

I have already found a new job, a better one.

I post this story only to let people know that, while sometimes the cost of convictions is steep, sometimes the only cost is a little uncertainty in life.

I hope we will all, whenever we are called upon, 'speak our minds, even if our voices shake'.

Announcement from Joss, cross-posted from the SpiritFire list:

-- -- -- --
We're all set for SpiritFire Festival, 2007!

Dates: August 1-5 (Wednesday arrivals, Sunday departures

New: You can opt to camp an extra night (Sunday to Monday) at the site instead of leaving Sunday! Information will go up about that soon on our website, which will now gradually begin to take shape with 2007 events and info.

Rates are staying the same! Early registration will begin earlier, though, so folks have more time at the lowest rate to sign up.

An announcement will be made soon about when registration opens, how to apply for things like scholarships and presenter positions, etc. - keep an eye out here and at the SFF website:

Going to the Playa?

For those of you who will be on the Playa this year, don't miss an all night sacred fire circle. I can't be there this year, but last year was intense and beautiful.
Here is the announcement from Jeff and friends:

Sacred Fire Circle Alchemy returns to Burning Man!!

Spinner and I send our love. We will be staying at Easel Park, just look for Gary Stadler’s giant rainbow crayon tower, if you want to know just what it looks like, go to www.heartmagic.com/tower34.html

When you click on the above link, you will see just how easy we will be to find. Come on by and say hello! Spinner & I will be setting up camp on Monday, the 28th. We will be setting up the fire circle on Tuesday afternoon.

If you’re planning on going to Burning Man, please contact me off list at Jeff@mcbridemagic.com

or call me at 702-433-3881.

The information on the Burning Man fire circle is following:

FIRE CIRCLE ALCHEMY
WED. NIGHT August 30th
MIDNIGHT TIL SUNRISE
Location: WAY EAST AND NEAR THE FENCE
(JUST ABOUT AS FAR AWAY AS YOU CAN GET)

Johnny D, from Otter’s Oasis, is co-hosting this event, with Lieve, Dr. Dan, Tomas, and all the Otters. An art car called Letucia will be departing from Otter Camp at 10:30 or 11:00 on Wednesday night for your drums and other supplies.

Please help spread the word about this fire circle event!

More information will come.

Yours in the mysteries of fire...

hello all of you amazing spirit fire folk,
it seems that i left my cloak by the drum circle in the wee hours of this morning. it is a grey wool cloak with a celtic circle clasp. it is a most magical garment and would be a severe loss to my heart to lose it. i believe i left it on the ground on the left side of the drum circle as you would face it from the fire.
please call me @ 617.504.6085 or my new e-mail address is artisan.fx@ gmail.com. i do sincerely hope some one has this and can return it to me.

thank you,

Heads Up: Saturday Potluck Workshops

What are your passions? What are you excited to talk about? We all bring gifts to SpiritFire; here's a chance to share them with each other.

Saturday afternoon will be dedicated to potluck workshops. Anyone who wishes to can hold a workshop, discussion, ritual, or meditation. Time slots will last between 30 minutes to 2 hours. The entire afternoon is set aside, so there will be plenty of time to sample different things.

What kinds of things could you talk about? How about...

* fire spinning safety
* how to make or select poi
* yoga
* rhythm swap
* how did that chant go?
* hand care for drummers
* how to play berimbau

You could even team up with a friend if you like.

Someone reading this is thinking "Me? Oh, I couldn't possibly." Hit the pause button! I recently went to a potluck technical conference. The notion of presenting anything was terrifying. I thought,” I can't think of thirty minutes of stuff about anything. And if I did, who would want to hear me talk for that long? No one will come. And if they come, I'll just die if I have to talk in front of people. And if I don't die, someone will stand up in the middle and shout ‘Wrong! Wrong! J'accuse!’ and storm out.“

Well, I didn't die or melt through the floor. The adrenaline wore off after ten minutes. Several people showed up and found value in what I presented. I got to talk with folks in my professional niche. We ran late, in fact. And when my session was done I got to listen to other people share their own specialties. It was energizing to be around so much skill and enthusiasm. and it would be wonderful to experience the same thing at SpiritFire.

The signup board will be available on Saturday. Until then, let the idea steep in the back of your mind.

Aren't you curious what folks will bring?

See you in a couple weeks-

Sacred All Night Fire Circle tribe . . .

Hello SpiritFire family and friends,

if you haven't heard already, there is a tribe called Sacred All Night Fire Circle:

http://tribes.tribe.net/sacredfire

We'd love to see all of you there -- we've got 340 members and growing. Please join (if you aren't a member already!), post about all the all night fire circle events you know about or plan to go to. In these times of change I think it is helpful for there to be cross-communication and cross-pollination. Write about what new magics are happening at SpiritFire so we can hear about it.

I hope that the tribe will be a central information hub about where we can get our fires all over the world. Support new fires, stay connected to existing fires. Join your friends and beloveds on fire circle tours. Arrange rides, ask questions, and post reviews of the events you go to.

Your presence is valued. Please spread the word to your non-tribe friends! They don't have to be a member of tribe to access the page and read the information and reviews at:

http://tribes.tribe.net/sacredfire

Thank you, and I hope to see you all at SpiritFire this year (although I am still working out the logistics!)

--Liz

Fire Lighting Rituals for SpiritFire 2006

Hello SFF Tribe,

I'm excited to present the fire lighting rituals for this year's coming festival. Each night we set a different ritual focus as a way for those who wish to plug into a greater, more unified sense of intention that takes the circle through to dawn. There is no "requirement" to follow this intention, but anyone who's come to previous SpiritFire Festivals can tell you that each night's feel differs greatly depending on the reason behind the spark that lights the fire!

Anyone who has attended previous SFF fires - please feel invited to share your impressions and experiences surrounding these different themes, if you'd like, for those who might be curious about it.

Meanwhile - the fires:

First Fire Circle (Wednesday, July 5th): Reflections

This night as we chant, dance, and create beautiful music with each other, we take time to see ourselves mirrored in the sacred faces and spaces around us. Let us reflect with our light the places where we join in communion of the divine. We look deeply as we open to the spirit of this land, the animals, the elements and each other noting where we are in this moment as we embark on the journey of this week together. Dancers are invited to mirror one another's movements, musicians are invited to bounce back each other's rhythms, and chanters are invited to echo our voices as we weave ourselves into one shared heartbeat. Play with mirrors and other reflective objects is encouraged. Tonight we do not set any intention to go until dawn, although in the spirit of creative & spontaneous ritual, the circle will do its will!

Hosted by Asherah Bridge.

Second Fire Lighting (Thursday, July 6th): UniFire!

Tonight we officially open the ecstatic, all-night fire circle that goes through to dawn. We ask that everyone be present at the fire lighting to participate in the ritual agreement between the pathways of music, motion, voice, Seva, and the Mysteries. This will begin with a procession of chant and rattles from the Sanctuary leading to the fire circle, and will feature our traditional UniFire dialogues between the pathways and all of us. If you have blue, green, red, yellow, black or white clothing, or a mixture of these, we invite you to wear it tonight to symbolize your connection with the pathways. (Music = red, motion = blue, voice = yellow, green or white = Seva, & black = the Mysteries)

Hosted by V. Josselyne Price.

Third Fire Lighting (Friday, July 7th): Dance with the Allies

Dieties, Ancestors, Animal totems, Elementals, Spirit Guides, Loa, Saints, Faery, Angels, Devas, Dakinis, Gandharvas, Asparas, Unanu, plant spirits, Stone Beings... who are the allies that you call on in your spiritual and magical work? On this night we honor the spirits that help us in our spiritual work. We will play, dance and sing for them, creating sacred art to give as an offering. We encourage all who enter to carry with them some symbolic form of your allies. This may be as simple as a pendant or as elaborate as coming in the guise of your ally, to dance as the embodiment of that power.
Hosted by Martin Bridge.

Final SpiritFire Sacred Circle (Saturday, July 8th): Ritual of All Beings

The Web of Life, the Tree of Life, the Council of All-Beings. By whatever name we call it, the living tapestry of plants, animals, and other life forms on Earth both affects and is affected by how we walk the paths of our lives. On this night through to the dawn we honor our connection to all the beings in the web of life. Through our music and dance we will explore and express our connection to this larger community, culminating in a renewal of our individual commitments to honoring the place of All Beings in the world and strengthening our own place in it as well. We encourage all who enter the circle on this night to don the persona of another member of the web of life and to engage the community from their perspective: to see with their eyes and feels with their roots. .

Hosted by Steve Trombulak.

Logistics questions for the SF crew.

Hello Fire Family,

I'm hoping a SF veteran can benefit from your experience.

I've volunteered to be the fire crew chief at the Wild Fire festival coming up in June. We will be having two bon fires, a little smaller than the SF fire, with one small dance circle. The festival runs for 3-nights.

1) Where does SF get its wood for the fires? Would I be able to get our wood there too? Cost?

2) Do you split the wood using a sledge and wedge, or do you rent a machine? How long does it take? With how many people?

3) I never thought to ask this before ... What safety gear do you have on-hand (fire extinguishers, water buckets, etc) and where do you keep it? The SF crew is so sly, I never noticed before.

4) How much mulch do you use for the SF dance area. (We'll have a smaller area, but I can scale down).

Thank you so much for your help, and I am looking forward to the July SF.

Peace and flames,
Scott

SpiritFire Registration Is OPEN!

Hello Tribe, hope everyone is having a smooth entry into 2006...

SpiritFire Festival (July 5-9, 2006) registration is beginning now, with very reduced rates until March 10th. Online registration should be available in the coming week or two, but right now you can download the mail-in registration forms (PDF or DOC) via the registration page on the SFF website. http://spiritfirefestival.org/register.php All registrations include mostly organic, tasty food prepared by the Sufis who own the retreat.

This year we have a fantastic initial lineup of fellow artists coming to share their knowledge and enthusiasm - please check out who's coming at http://
spiritfirefestival.org/people.php?group=Teachers - you'll see some of who were with us last year, as well, to give you an idea of the flow of the event.

Some of the fire lighting rituals and other info is already up, as well, although things will be changing quite a bit as the months progress. I'm blessed to work and play with Martin, Asherah, Janet, Steve, Jeanette, Yuri, and Lela to create one heck of a good time - couldn't ask for anything more. Except for you to be there too.

We hope you'll make it - the vibes are feeling good!

Many blessings,
Josselyne

We are looking for input from you about what you'd like to see offered in 2006 at SpiritFire Festival. If you plan on attending,

-What kind of workshops would be really interesting to you, that would help you dive more deeply into the five pathways of music, dance, voice, Seva, and the mysteries? (if you want to know more about the pathways, check out http://spiritfirefestival.org/mandala.php)

-What aspects of the festival would you be interested in taking a deeper part in? (co-leading affinity or council groups? Presenting? Pre-festival preparation? Artistic or pre-ritual projects? Vending? On-site help?)

You can reply to any of the staff via our website (http://spiritfirefestival.org) - or if you have general comments to share, please feel free to reply via the Tribe.net list!

The Sunrise Ruby

In the early morning hour,
just before dawn, lover and beloved wake
and take a drink of water.

She asks' "Do you love me or yourself more?
Really, tell the absolute truth."

He says, " There's nothing left of me.
I'm like a ruby held up to the sunrise.
Is it still a stone, or a world
made of redness? It has no resistance
to sunlight."

That is how Hallaj said, I am God,
and told the truth!

The ruby and the sunrise are one.
Be courageous and dicipline yourself.

Completely become hearing and ear,
and wear this sun-ruby as an earring.

Work. Keep digging your well.
Don't think about getting off from work.
Water is there somewhere.

Submit to a daily practice.
Your loyalty to that
is a ring on the door.

Keep knocking, and the joy inside
will eventually open a window
and look out to see who's there.
7th Annual Women's Belly and Womb Conference

I am ALisa and I am writing to you today from Massachusetts. For the last seven years about a 100 women a year come dressed in red to honor our belly and womb in multitudes of ways. Brothers, please let the women know if you choose. It is an awesome way for the women to viscerally honor the Goddess.
There is among other things, belly dancing (some tribal style this year), belly healing, belly painting, belly communication, belly singing, belly honoring. I am the organizer and for the last seven years I also founded Priestess Path Apprenticeship on the East Coast, Women in Power and Daughters of the Earth Gathering. This year it happens on November 5th in Massachusetts.

I am among many things your sister, a dancer, a singer, ceremonialist and women's empowerment trainer since my early twenties. Tomorrow is my 46th birthday. What matters to me right now is the state of the world and women's power in relationship to what is next on our planet, carrying out the visions that come through me, and knowing that we can enact outrageous beautiful ceremonies that liberate and reshape our future. Needless to say, I have a great life in this realm because women are amazing as you know. If you don't know, come hang out with more amazing women and they will mirror your own beauty back. Right? You don't need a conference for that however. We are everywhere!

The Women's Belly and Womb Conference was a vision from my first firewalk. After walking about eighty times over the coals and being under the full moon in the snow, I had a vision that we must gather as women and truly honor our shared stories of our bellies and wombs as well as activating our power here.

If women come the night before we have both bellydancing as well as Sheri Winston's, The Maps of the Clitoris (fascinating actually) and the opening of a live Red Tent. I've been very busy this year including recording a CD of my belly chants that I named Women Rise Up. Shawna Carol will be here too, recording artist of Goddess Chant. Pass the word if you can because we actually could use these kind of days for women all over our planet. Many blessings to each of you. Keep the magic of our bellies alive, awake and sacred. Oh yes, if you want to check out more go to members.aol.com/alisastar/BellyWombConf2005.html
Many blessings, ALisa

It's called Ashes and Sparks, and is taking place at Earthdance in Plainfield, MA. More info at www.earthdance.net. Call Lita at 413-634-5678 if you would be willing to come out and support the performance with your rhythms.

TranceMission Update

Hi again folks,

The donations and RSVPs are rolling in. Oberon is going to be there. Here is some missing information to make it easier for everyone to be involved. Deposits can be made directly to the accout! Just walk, or dance, to your local Washington Mutual Bank and make a deposit to account number 181-259943-9. If mail is easier Mail to:

TranceMission
c/o Matthew Petronko
428 Madison Taylor Ct.
Las Vegas NV 89144

I would ask that after you donate that you email me here so I may amass a list of all the contributers.

ALSO-

There is a new way to donate! Sponsor a dancer! One or more dancers may be wearing pedometers to track how far we walk during the night. You can sponsor a dancer by the meter or by the mile, or any other measurement of legnth. I will leave the donations up to you as I don't know what to expect from the distance. Any takers for $1 a mile? Maybe $10? A penny a meter?

AND-

Does anyone have a chainsaw? Some waterbuckets for firesafety? Assistance with setup on Thursday. Drummers and drums, these we need more of. Alter Materials too!

If anyone has any more questions email me or call me at 510-282-5859.

Thank you everyone for your enthusiasm

> Dear Friends,
>
> Something amazing is happening and I wanted to share it with you. My dear
> friend and apprentice Matthew Petronko is organizing and hosting a
> wonderful benefit event on our behalf, and he asked me to write a little
> note of introduction.
>
> The event is called TranceMission, a 3-night, all-night sacred fire
> ritual, at a lovely private home in the Santa Cruz mountains this coming
> weekend (Friday 8/12- Monday 8/15). See below for more information...
>
> I will be there for the event and Morning Glory also (her mother's health
> permitting), to join in the festivities and share stories, songs, chants,
> drumming and dancing around the fire. We'll bring along a batch of my
> books, Grimoire for the Apprentice Wizard, which I'll be happy to
> autograph for anyone who wishes to purchase one. We'll also bring some of
> our Millennial Gaia statues, and our new jewelry including the beautiful
> Phoenix Caduceus inspired by FireDance. We look forward to raising our
> energy together and sharing sacred space.
>
> The occasion for this benefit is to help us move into a new home. We have
> lived at our present location, "Shady Grove," in Penngrove for 5½ years
> now. This is a charming little complex of dwellings inhabited by nine
> people, five of whom were the original Ravenheart family, but now also
> including our friends Linda and Julie, and Morning Glory's sweet
> 88-year-old invalid mother, Polly. It is also the home of our family
> businesses-Mythic Images and the Grey School of Wizardry.
>
> But the property had actually been purchased those years ago by our
> 10-year Ravenheart family- and business-partner, Liza. Recently, she has
> gotten engaged, and she and her fiancé have served us all with eviction
> notices. Most of the gang here have already moved out, leaving just
> Morning Glory, Polly, Linda and me.
>
> We have been searching for a suitable new home for us, and for our
> businesses, and have applied for several promising places. As much as we
> would love to purchase a property, such a dream is unfortunately beyond
> our present means, so for now, we are just looking at rentals. We can
> certainly afford the monthly rent on those places we are looking at, but
> we will need additional money for deposits and moving expenses, and our
> own resources have been pretty well depleted at the moment by restocking
> merchandise for the coming holiday season. Needless to say the timing on
> this move is hardly ideal.
>
> And so--all on his own--Matthew conceived this generous idea to throw a
> benefit for us. It will also be--all on its own--a fantastic Fire Circle
> event! We are deeply touched and moved by this kindness, and are looking
> forward to seeing you there. If you can't attend, then please hold a place
> in your heart and your magick for us, so that this story will have a happy
> ending.
>
> Blessed Be,
> Oberon

Hello dear friends (women and men),

Happy summer. I am writing today to ask you to please help get the word out that a powerful women's gathering is happening in Massachusetts in early August. This is a new vision dream that many women are responding to with a great resounding yes in our desire to be on the earth together in a deeply meaningful way at this time. I have been inside of months of high level transformation work with women since April. This is one of my first opportunities to let people know that we are on and I am ready with twenty teacher/musician/dancer/ healer/singer/priestesses to bring this dream to life in a beautiful way. Please check it out. Daughters of the Earth
With great respect, ALisa
A Women's Tribal Event
August 5-7, 2005
Earthlands, Petersham, Ma

Women Rise Up, in our power and our truth. Women Rise Up, in our love for the earth. Women Rise Up, honor life, death and rebirth. Women Rise Up, for all we're worth. We're a force to be reckoned with. ~
Chant written by ALisa Starkweather

We come to take our place on the earth, co-creating, co-conspiring, releasing our pre-conceived expectations to find ourselves alive and awake to what the sacred moment brings us.

Connection to the Earth and Our Body:
Enter the Temple of Healing and Dance:
Bellydancing, honoring our bodies, Plant Spirit Medicine, herbwalks, harvesting food from the organic gardens, yoga, ceremony, art, massage and bodywork. Cultural change-making, sustainability, connecting with the beauty of the Mother and ourselves

Connection to the Air and Our Breath:
Enter the Sky Temple of Inhaling Inspiration:
Transformational Breathwork, SpiritSong, Vision Council, spiritual sustenance, abundance skills, dreamwork, sounding, creativity and reveling in wonder

Connection to the Fire and Our Spirit:
Enter the Phoenix Temple of Passion and Pleasure:
Firecircle, drumming, dancing, singing at night, storytelling, sharing tales and teachings of sacred sexuality, re-committing to our dreams, boundary setting, sunrise ceremonies, prayer, gratitude sharing, nourishing wildwomen natures

Connection to the Water and Our Moontime, Womb Journeys and Tears:
Enter the Women's Red Tent:
Swimming, moontime blessings, rites of passages, honoring our belly and womb stories, grieving rituals, nourished in the Red Tent together, resting, journaling, a place to be, a space to heal. Being with the fullness of the moon. Cultivating yin.

The CALL: WE GATHER THE WOMEN; the drummers, the dancers, the singers, the healers, the priestesses, the dreamers, the weavers, the mystical and wise ones. We call the young ones, the mothers, the seekers, the elders, the women who know that their power, their visions and essence are needed in all forms of expression for the balance of life now. This women's gathering is a deep exploration of our visions, voice, magic, intentions, and our place here on the planet sharing stories and inspiration that will help guide and sustain us during these times. Facilitated in a spontaneous yet organized "be-in-the-moment way" to meet our many soul hungers, we will share a rich array of our gifts collectively.

We share in common our need to rest, eat, dance, talk, council, heal, and be in ceremony together.

We share the need to be on the earth, outside, rooted and connected to the sacred land.

We hunger for dreams, insights, validation, deep meaningful interactions and inspiration to live our lives ever more powerfully in service to life.

In the safety of one another's company we shed our old skin anew and share in the natural transformation that comes from being together.

We need and hunger for safe places to cry, laugh, scream, be seen and touch our own wild and ecstatic natures (your birthright).

Under the new sliver of moon we howl and build a community of women, called to this vision to meet face to face as daughters of this beautiful Mother Earth.

Other places to gather in ceremony on the land are the Stone People's Lodge, the Firecircle and the Medicine Circle. We will designate the Maiden's Grove, the Crone's Hut and the Mother's Milk Stream. Also on the land is a 4000 year old ceremonial site from a matriarchal tribe. Earthlands is off the grid and is an ecological community.

Facilitated and envisioned by ALisa Starkweather, founder of the women's mystery school, Priestess Path Apprenticeship, the Women's Belly and Womb Conferences, co-founder of Women in Power; Initiating Ourselves to the Predator Within. ALisa is a certified Shadow Work and Transformational Breathwork facilitator who travels internationally as a women's empowerment trainer, teacher and ceremonialist. She brings twenty years of experience in community building drawing from the wildwoman archetype. Her CD's of original chants are Daughter of the Earth and Calling Us Home.
